DOJ denies Al Qaeda link in Colombia passport fraud scheme
With American help, Colombian authorities broke up a fake passport ring with links to Al Qaeda and Hamas. And yet, American prosecutors are denying it, probably because it doesn't fit in with their pet theory that some smugglers who brought terrorists into the country "thought they were smuggling FARC members". Yeah, right.
In Washington, however, Justice and Homeland Security officials were surprised by the announcement of the investigation, which they said involved people posing as members of Colombia's largest rebel army, the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, or FARC -- not al Qaeda or Hamas.

Colombian officials said the gang allegedly supplied an unknown number of citizens from Pakistan, Jordan, Iraq, Egypt and other countries with false passports and Colombian nationality without them ever setting foot in the country.

An undisclosed number of those arrested are wanted for working with the al Qaeda terror network and the militant Palestinian group Hamas, said acting Attorney General Jorge Armando Otalora.

The counterfeit Colombian, Spanish, Portuguese and German passports were used to enter the United States and Europe, he said.

But Justice Department spokesman Bryan Sierra said an indictment unsealed Wednesday in Miami charges 10 foreign nationals with smuggling "people that they thought were members of FARC into the United States."

"We are not alleging any connections to any terror organization other than the FARC," said Justice Department spokesman Bryan Sierra.

He said the U.S. will seek to extradite the 10 alleged smugglers, of whom eight have been arrested.

The consequences of voting Hamas
Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist said that the US will not give aid to the Palestinians unless Hamas renounces violence and agrees to recognize Israel. The EU is thinking along the same lines and so is the Israeli government.

Frist also said that we shouldn't "overreact" to the Hamas victory because the voters may have been expressing their frustration with Fatah rather than endorsing violence. I would like to believe that but the celebration of violence and martyrdom that's been flourishing in the West Bank and Gaza, has been associated with Hamas since the group's inception. Perhaps Mr Frist wanted to give Palestinians the benefit of the doubt but the world has been absolving Palestinians from the responsibilities of their actions for decades now, to no one's benefit. Mr. Frist is saying "you are not responsible for your self, you are not responsible for your society, and you are not responsible for your country. Your vote doesn't matter."

Meanwhile, Hamas is not too worried about any of this. Hamas leader Mahmoud Zahar said that they'll seek financial aid from the Arab world (good luck with that, Mr Zahar!) and they have no intention of renouncing violence or recognizing Israel. As a matter of fact, one of his first demands is that Israel changes her flag.
"Israel must remove the two Blue stripes from its National flag", said Zahar. "The stripes on the flag are symbols of occupation. They signify Israel's borders stretching from the River Euphrates to the River Nile."

Something fishy is going on at the Kennel Club
I’ve gone through quite a few hobbies in my life, and I usually get quite obsessive about them until I totally burn myself out. I usually start with lots of research, which is always the most fun part, since you can do it while lying in bed and only the sky is the limit. You should see all the imaginary gardens I’ve created while poring through hundreds of books and catalogs. They would make florrie turn green with envy.

Dear comrades: Just let it go already
Conspiracy theories about unsolved crimes can go on for a very long time; people still write books about Jack the Ripper, or debate whether Lizzie Borden really killed her parents, or whether Fidel was responsible for JFK's assassination or was it really "a lone gunman". But when a crime has been solved and the criminals have been proven guilty beyond a shadow of a doubt, what is it that keeps a 60-year-old case still open for debate? Last week in Manhattan, a forum discussed the "artistic influence" of the Rosenbergs:
While the trial of the Rosenbergs was flawed by technical improprieties, their crimes are not uncertain or unresolved. Julius Rosenberg, with Ethel as his accomplice, was the head of a sophisticated spy network that deeply penetrated the American atomic program and relayed top secrets to Stalin's Kremlin. In his memoirs Nikita Khrushchev noted that the Rosenbergs "vastly aided production of our A-bomb." Joyce Milton and Ronald Radosh wrote a damning account of their activities in "The Rosenberg File" (1983). And the Rosenbergs' guilt was corroborated by the 1995 declassification of the Venona documents, thousands of decrypted KGB cables intercepted by the National Security Agency in the 1940s.

The notion that anyone would today deny their fundamental complicity in Soviet subversion is extraordinary, almost comically so. But comedy was not quite the mentality at the Rosenberg event. "Ambiguity is the key word, I think," said Mr. Doctorow, regarding our understanding of the past, though in this instance ambiguous is precisely what it is not.

Mr. Kushner argued the Rosenbergs were "murdered, basically." Mr. Doctorow went further, explaining that he wanted to use their circumstances to tell "a story of the mind of the country." It was a mind, apparently, filled with loathing and paranoia--again, never mind the truth of the charges against the Rosenbergs or other spies of the time. "The principles of the Cold War had reached absurdity," he continued. "We knew that the Russians were no threat, but we wanted to persuade Americans to be afraid" and so impose "a Puritan, punitive civil religion." Pronounced Mr. Kushner: "Our failure to come to terms with a brutal past, our failure to open up the coffins and let the ghosts out, has led to our current, horrendous situation."

Iran completes huge military exercise
More Iranian saber-rattling:
LONDON [MENL] -- Iran has completed a huge military exercise that tested Teheran's ability to attack Western shipping and Arab oil facilities in the Gulf.

Western diplomatic sources said that in December 2005 Iran completed its largest military exercise in years. The sources said the military conducted an air and sea exercise designed to test capabilities to strike U.S. and Arab targets throughout the Persian Gulf.

"The exercise was meant to show the West that Iran could stop all oil shipments in the Gulf and destroy numerous oil facilities in Gulf Arab countries," a diplomatic source said.

The exercise included a range of fighter-jets and helicopters from the Iranian Air Force. The navy contributed surface vessels and submarines.
Better have oil facilities temporarily destroyed than have a nuclear Iran, followed shortly by a nuclear Syria, Saudi Arabia and Egypt. No thanks.
