Speaking Out
The United Nations Population Fund estimates that there are perhaps 5,000 victims of honor killings annually. For each of these victims, most of them young women, there are dozens more waiting to be murdered by their fathers or brothers because of their alleged sexual indiscretions. In countries where murderers get a slap in the wrist for "cleansing the family's honor" and a hero's welcome upon their release from jail, women have no place to turn and women's shelters are rare if they exist at all. In Jordan, the shelters refuse to admit women suspected of "dishonor"; a few women have gone into protective custody in prison in order to save their lives. And Jordan is progressive; in other places, government agencies don't even keep track:
In Jordan, thanks to a strong women's movement and one intrepid reporter, Rana Husseini of The Jordan Times, every killing — one or two a month, as compared to 100 or so a month in Pakistan and about 35 a month in Yemen and in the West Bank — is reported.

What now?
Hamas is so unprepared for office that it's almost funny. They didn't think they were going to win and they don't have a clue what to do next. A Hamas leader in Nablus said 'we wanted to be in the opposition'. That makes sense because they didn't expect or want to deal with the responsibilities of governing a state and I doubt that many of them have any experience in government or management or maintaining a budget or dealing with the everyday needs of millions of people, their specialties all these years have been rhetoric and terror.

I think it's likely that Hamas will keep a truce with Israel and not continue staging terror attacks because that would force war upon the Palestinian people. To save face, they'll drag their feet through negotiations and hem and haw about making any concessions but they will have to be politicians and act like politicians. It's likely that factions will form within Hamas and new groups will appear who remain dedicated to terrorism, a Hamas military wing. And since Fatah is now the opposition, they have no reason to stop terrorism, they now have incentives to continue the war on Israel: it makes them appear as heroes - whereas Hamas will have to participate in peace negotiations with the enemy - and they get revenge on their opponents by making them look bad and inefficient and unable to govern. So in other words, nothing much changes.

And how do the people feel?
Indeed, the security forces guarding hotels where foreign election observers stayed had long faces. "This is terrible," said one named Majdi. "Maybe Hamas will tell us to go to war." Looking over at his colleagues, he asked "You guys ready for jihad?" The line of young men in camouflage uniforms carrying assault rifles looked up at him blankly. "No man," said one. "No way."
But hours after the results were announced, Hamas voters in Nablus said that Hamas's victory means that it will for certain lay down its arms and give up its ideology.
"If they were in the opposition, they would have been able to continue attacks," said a university student named Essam as he sat in a Nablus coffee shop with a friend, smoking a water pipe and discussing the new situation. "But now that they are the government, they can't attack Israel."
His friend Yazen, who also voted for Hamas, looked forward to the new situation. "Now they must talk to Israel. They have no choice. We need to stability and they have to bring it."

Vote for Jewlicious, and avert G-d's wrath
Th- J-w-sh G-d -s s-ch -n -ngry G-d, y-- c-n't -v-n s-y v-w-ls -n H-s pr-s-nc-!
Jewlicious, the current blog where Michael, son (some might say demon-spawn) of packen and Pete (Alois), hangs his kippah, is in the running in the Jewish & Israeli Special Olympics Blog Awards in several categories. Today is the last day of the voting, and Jewlicious is close to winning in several of them, so your vote counts and could really help put them over the top. So help them out and do it already! It'll take you twenty seconds.

I see you're still here. Watch this pendulum. You are getting sleepy. Veeeeery sleeeeeepy. You are completely in my command and completely in the thrall of my voice. You feel strangely hypnotized and strangely compelled to click on the following links and vote for Jewlicious. God help the poor bastard who tries to stop you. You can't control yourself any longer, and will fight and defeat a thousand men, and leave a thousand orphans wailing, if they stand between you and these links.

Best Designed Blog
Best Series
Best Post
Best Overall Blog
Best Jewish Culture Blog
Best Israel Advocacy (Hasbarah) Blog
Best Politics & Current Affairs Blog
Best Group Blog

Now be a good little Democrat and vote the straight Jewlicious ticket. If Jewlicious was up for Pope, your vote had better go to Jewlicious.

Or else.

PS-If you just can't stand Jews, that's an even better reason to vote! Just think-if you help Jewlicious win a category with your vote, you're gonna make 11 other Jewish sonofabitches cry! You can't lose!

Oom, Shmoom!*
Today, January 27th, is the UN's Holocaust Memorial Day. It took the UN 60 years, spiced liberally with pervasive institutional Jew-hatred and continuous denunciations of the Zionist homeland project, before Dan Gillerman was able to shame that odious and reprehensible butchers' social club into acknowledging history's greatest evil atrocity. So, pardon us if we don't give a fig, and don't commemorate this day in any way. The majority of today's UN leaders, including a majority of Security Council members, are directly responsible for allowing the current crisis with Iran to fester, one in which the Jewish people face yet another existential threat just for the horrible crime of being Jews. Too little, too late, too insincere.

This blog will honor the memories of the victims of the Holocaust on the day that Israel does so: Yom Ha-Shoah. A UN Holocaust Day is about as legitimate as Kwaanzaa.
