Tweedledee vs Tweedledum
Palestinians are preparing to vote in the parliamentary elections today. I find it interesting that Palestinian voters consider corruption as the most important factor in their voting; I thought it would be all about the evil occupation and the racist apartheid fence.
About 1.3 million registered voters for the first parliamentary election in 10 years will choose from among 728 candidates contesting 132 seats. Half are directly elected by constituency and the remainder by proportional representation.

Khalil Shikaki, director of a Palestinian policy centre, said that Hamas's rise in support had less to do with its extremist views than distaste for Fatah. "In exit polls I held last year in the presidential elections and in the local elections, over 95% of the voters said that corruption was the most important factor in their voting. An overwhelming majority said that the PA and Fatah are corrupt," he said.

The best part of the day
You just got off work, you're slogging through traffic , that self-improvement tape you have on isn't cutting it, the radio has too many commercials, and you just want to get home. What is it you look forward to, what's your favourite thing about coming home? Being greeted by your mate, your kids, your dog, your cat? Taking off your shoes, your tie, your bra? Having a martini?

Iran sanction proposals in motion; Israel proposes oil sanctions as a crippling blow
Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty has a very excellent two-part article about the intensifying diplomatic push to sanction Iran, and the possibilities for a war effort. In Part I: Sanctions, Israeli experts believe an oil embargo would be a potent weapon-against Iran, not against us. I continue to stand behind my modest proposal-not only embargoing their oil, but destroying their oil facilities so they can't produce and smuggle.
A report in the Israeli daily "Haaretz" today offers one view. It says Israel, which sees Iran’s nuclear program as one of the Jewish state’s main security threats, has presented proposals for sanctions in ongoing talks with the United States, EU, and Russia.

Aluf Benn, the author of the "Haaretz" report, said the main sanction Israel has proposed would be an embargo on Iran’s oil trade. Iran is currently the world’s fourth-largest oil exporter and experts say such an embargo would send already-high world oil prices skyrocketing. But Benn said Israeli experts believe the cost of the embargo for Iran would be far higher.

"No country is dependent in its energy requests, its energy demands, upon Iran. [But] the Iranian oil industry, for instance, they need to export oil not only for the cash, but also to get back refined oil products like gasoline and other products because they don’t have enough refinery capacity," Benn told RFE/RL. "And also, the Iranian economy is totally dependent upon oil exports. Therefore, Iran might be hit even more than the rest of the world -- if an oil embargo is indeed imposed."
Here's Part II: Strikes, as well.

A staged kidnapping?
German archaeologist Susanne Osthoff, a convert to Islam, was kidnapped in Iraq by al-Qa'eda and was held hostage for a month. After her family's appeals for her release and a ransom of millions paid by the German government, she was freed by her abductors but she didn't thank the German government for her release and she plans to go back to Iraq. She was also found to have several thousand dollars of the ransom money paid to secure her release.
Yesterday's newspapers wondered whether she was given the money by her kidnappers because she co-operated with them or was involved in her own kidnapping to secure money for humanitarian projects. Alternatively, it was suggested that, as she is reported to have told investigators, she received the money as part-compensation for money the kidnappers stole from her when she was seized.
So, what's the truth?

The prejudice map
Google Blogoscoped has put up an interesting map showing google results of the stereotypes associated with various countries. The results for the US are "strength, dislike of walking, geniality and hospitality, guarding their rights, anti-Muslim politics." The map omits Greece, so I googled "Greeks are known for *" and came up with "hospitality", "philosophy", "lamb dishes", "handsome features" and "red, juicy tomatoes" among other things. I had no idea we had a reputation about tomatoes.
