I don't really want tickets to this one
Imagine having to sit through the world's slowest concert:
In an abandoned church in the remote part of eastern Germany, the world's slowest and longest concert is taking place. American composer John Cage, long known for creating highly experimental music, wrote a piece called organ2/ASLSP (As SLow aS Possible), the performance of which began on September 5, 2001 in the Buchardi church in Halberstadt. That's right, this concert has been going on for over 4 years. In case you think that this is a long concert, think again. The concert was written to last 638 years, putting its conclusion sometime in the year 2639.
Which means we won't be around for the DVD release. Or the holographic cube release. So, so sad.

Not a Holloway thread! (Sorry, it is)
So I finally caught up with last month's Vanity Fair and read Bryan Borrough's article about the Natalee Holloway disappearance in Aruba. I know it's old news to all of you but since you probably have followed the case much closer than I have, perhaps you can tell me your opinion.

Do you think Joran Van der Sloot murder Natalee? Did the Kalpoe brothers help him? The shoes Joran was wearing that evening are missing and he and the brothers have changed their story about the events of that night at least three times. Is it possible that there are other suspects that are being ignored because the Twitty family pressured the police to focus their investigation on Joran?

Was Natalee drinking a lot throughout the trip, as the chief of police has said, and did she have oral sex with Joran, as he has said, or was she a "naive" girl who, according to her mother, never drank, never had a boyfriend and never had sex?

Is there an official cover-up of this story by the Aruban authorities as claimed by Natalee's mother, or is it more a matter of police incompetence and difference in judicial systems?

Dan Riehl has a good summary of the Vanity Fair article: Riehl World View: Natalee Holloway And Vanity Fair

Hakama
We all know about Sudan's policy of rape in Darfur and the rape campaign carried out by the Janjaweed militia. This is even more sickening: According to Amnesty International, Arab women singers are complicit in rape; as the Arab men attack and rape African women, the singers offer songs of praise to the Sudanese president. They have good reason to praise him, the Sudanese government is not just complicit in these crimes but directly responsible:
Another human rights organisation, Human Rights Watch, today publishes alleged Sudanese government documents showing that it was much more closely involved with the Janjaweed than it has so far admitted. The documents, which Human Rights Watch said it had obtained from the civilian administration in Darfur and are dated February and March this year, call for "provisions and ammunition" to be delivered to known Janjaweed militia leaders, camps and "loyalist tribes". One document orders all security units in the area to tolerate the activities of Musa Hilal, the alleged Janjaweed leader in north Darfur interviewed by the Guardian last week.

Peter Takirambudde, the executive director of Human Rights Watch's Africa division, said: "These documents show that militia activity has not just been condoned, it's been specifically supported by Sudan government officials."

The official government line is that it did not arm or support the Janjaweed, though its presence was useful in helping to combat rebels in Darfur.

Headlines
Such joy and friendship... Iranian newspaper invites readers to choose headline for 'Sharon's death'. It's only fair that we invite our readers to choose a headline for Ahmadinejad's death. I nominate "Idiot extremist strung up by his balls".
The first issue of a newspaper that went on sale in Iran on Wednesday invites its readers to submit "the best headline for a story on [Israeli premier] Ariel Sharon's death." Published by Ansar Hezbollah, a group which represents the most extreme wing of Iran's radical Islamist movement, the publication is edited by Bagher Kharrazi, the nephew of Iran's interior minister, Kama Kharrazi. The daily which, according to a slogan printed on its masthead, defines itself "an instrument of joy and friendship" carries the macabre invitation on page 9. Readers whose submissions make a top 10 best headlines list will win an unspecified prize, the paper said.

Norman, OK: neither Normal nor OK
Formidable journalist Annie Jacobsen of WomensWallStreet has a trenchant analysis of the recent attempted mass-casualty terror attack in Norman, Oklahoma and concludes that there's a lot more to this story than meets the eye.

The authorities' continuous denials of it being Islamic terrorism, every time a Muslim terrorist strikes (or fails to strike) the US homeland, are getting ridiculous. Call it what it is: Islamic terrorism. Americans aren't going to run around shrieking our heads off and panicking. We're level-headed and practical people. Give it to us straight, and stop insulting our fucking intelligence!
Norman, Oklahoma, is mentioned in the intelligence report prepared by the House and the Senate on the 9/11 terrorist attacks; this report, which Congress has declassified, references known terrorists' activities in Norman, Oklahoma, no less than 17 times. In examining this and other U.S. government documents, a disturbing portrait emerges: Norman, Oklahoma, has been associated with terrorist activity ever since Osama Bin Laden's personal pilot, Mohamed Ihab Ali, went to Norman to take flying lessons back in 1993.

It's true, sometimes a cigar is just a cigar. But sometimes, when you peel away the layers, you find something else.
RTWT, naturally.
